Voyage Tallinn-Helsinki line and by bicycle
Every year, millions choose the ferry journey between Helsinki and Tallinn, with cyclists increasingly finding it a convenient option. Three ferry companies offer this route, all boasting modern fleets that can accommodate numerous cars and trucks. In Tallinn, the port is centrally located, less than a kilometer from the Old Town. Meanwhile, Helsinki’s port is larger, but you’ll need to cycle a bit further to reach the city’s center. Both cities feature excellent cycling networks, though Helsinki’s might be slightly more advanced.
Here are our tips to follow!
By ticket before, online!
When traveling by bike, you’re considered a vehicle, meaning you need to use the car entrance instead of the pedestrian one. I usually cycle to the front of the line and follow the crew’s hand signals to quickly board the ferry. Return tickets are often cheaper than one-way tickets. Passenger tickets are typically always available, but car tickets can sell out on popular departures as trucks take up a significant amount of space. The voyage lasts either 2 hours and 15 minutes or 3.5 hours on karaoke ships, which aim to save fuel and encourage you to eat and drink more onboard.
Eckerö Line – 2h 15 minutes. earliest ferry from Estonia 06:00 departure
A Bicycle costs only 5 EUR one way! One of their ferries goes to Muuga!
Viking Line – voyage is 2h 45 minutes. Bicycle costs 8 EUR one way.
Talllink – Biggest operator. Voyage 2 or 3.5 hours. A bicycle costs only 5 EUR one way!
Arrive 1 hour before departure
Loading of the ship is usually fast and professional. If tracks are all loaded they might leave 20-30 minutes before announced departure time!
Pay attention to:
- Some ships start and arrive from Tallinn Muuga. This is cargo port and located 25 km North-East from Tallinn Centre.
- On some ferry departures you can stay on board for the night. Basic price then includes also cabin to sleep.
- Some cyclists from Helsinki have reported bike thefts at their capital. So secure lock is essential and leaving your bicycle locked on the street for overnight is never good idea in big cities.
Food on board
Ships are known for their buffet tables. You can get your carbs on board. Buy food option beforehand and save a bit of money!
Enjoy your voyage!
